Helpdesk Search Help Interactive presentation of search functions (Adobe pdf o Flash Player).

Search Functions
The Torrossa site offers a quick "google like" search function directly on the homepage, in addition to dedicated advanced search page.
Users may also browse the site by subject or author, or by following the links provided in the tag cloud on the homepage.

Search mechanisms
Searches may be made for keywords or phrases.
In the absence of inverted commas, the system will search using the AND Boolean operator. The exact phrase will be searched if inverted commas are used.
Should a search include multiple search terms (eg. Divina Commedia), the system will also search files where the terms appear in a different order (eg. Commedia Divina).

Basic or "google-like" search
The quick search box is positioned immediately below the site logo on the homepage. The default setting "All" will search in all fields, including the full text.
The dropdown menu beside yhe search box allows users to limit searches to title, author, metadata or only full text.
The algorithm used by the Torrossa search engine will show results according to the following order of relevance:
  1. Keyword in title field
  2. Keyword in author field
  3. Keyword in subject or publisher field and other bibliographical fields; keyword or phrase
  4. Keyword in full text

In this way, if the term appears in the title of document A and within the full text of document B, the result for A will be shown above that of B.
We advise using the "Full text" search field should you wish to prioritise the occurences of the keyword within the full text.
Search results may be ordered according to the options given in the dropdown menu, and may be limited to 50 results per page.

Advanced Search
The advanced search option allows for searches to be made across ten fields, which may be selected using the drop-down menus.
The default Booleian operator is set as AND; users may select to use the operators OR, AND NOT, OR NOT.
By clicking the + key on the search page, users may view a second group of search criteria and combine the first search group with a second search group in order to refine searches.
Search fields may be cancelled by clicking on the x if not needed; the change will be saved for the duration of the search session.
Users may set filters to refine their searches, selecting parameters from language of publication, type of document, subject area or LC Classification.
Results are ordered, by default, according to relevance, while users may opt to change the order to "author", "tile" or "year of publication".

Browsing and viewing
The key word cloud on the homepage will also lead users to particular subject areas; the relative importance of each subject is determined by the number of contents contained in the collection.
Clicking on the tab at the left-hand side of the screen, a table opens allowing users to select Subject area or LC classification, or a list of authors and titles from which to begin browsing. This option differs from the key word cloud, as it allows a more precise selection of the subject area (browse by Painting and paintings, rather than The Arts). Search Results
Search results show the type of document available (e-book, periodical issue, part of work or article) and allows users to view the keyword in context for searches made within the full text or all fields. To view the context, open the window "show keyword in context" beside the document entry.
Records are enriched by additional content aimed at helping users to select the works of greater interest to their research: cover images, abstracts, Table of Contents, colophons and title pages.

Search Results > Facets
The search results page shows, on the right, a number of facets which permit users to further filter and refine search results according to the criteria such as type of work (monograph, chapter, journal, issue or article), language, year of publication, author and subject area.

Search Results > Breadcrumb navigation
If facets are used to refine search results, the search criteria applied by the user will be shown at the top of the page.
The "your search" option details the user's original search term, while the label that follows will indicate all filters added subsequently through the facets.
